THE INGREDIENTS

KRATOM

The kratom tree grows in Southeast Asia, where its leaves have been used as an energising and mildly psychoactive tea for thousands of years. A relative newcomer to the range of consciousness-altering herbs in the West, kratom is a subtle and intriguing plant with substantial medical and therapeutic potential and a nice recreational buzz that many find useful for focus or relaxation. In its native Asia, it has been chewed or brewed into a tea as herbal medicine to treat pain, boost energy, alleviate anxiety and symptoms of depression, and promote wellness and happiness.

GUAYUSA

Guayusa is a small tree (related to holly) that grows in the rainforest of northern Brazil and Ecuador. It has recently been growing in popularity in the West as an alternative to energy drinks and coffee. The leaves make an excellent stimulant tea with a mild flavour and a pleasant aroma reminiscent of maté tea. But the main attraction of Guayusa leaves is less their taste than their eye-popping caffeine levels – up to 7%, the highest known concentration of caffeine in any plant.

Frequently asked questions

Kratombucha is a new kind of drink, it is a combination of a traditional Kombucha with extracts from the bald of the plant Kratom.

The research team of High Cuisine has been researching the effects of special plants and herbs on the body for over 5 years. After our chefs combined this with haute cuisine on several occasions, we began to explore other combinations. The non-alcoholic beverage market has been growing rapidly for some time, from the rise of 0.0% beer to large luxury mocktail (virgin cocktails) bars in the US. We saw the opportunity to use our knowledge to develop a non-alcoholic drink with plant-based ingredients, that you still feel. After a long development process funded by The Bulldog with many tastings, tests and legal checks, the plant Kratom emerged as the winner as an active ingredient, in combination with the hip and healthy Kombucha drink.

Dozens of people participated in the creation of the drink. In the research and development process, we worked with professors and scholars of botany. After we determined the direction of the drink, our chefs worked with an external specialist in soft drink development to choose the flavour profiles. After we were satisfied with the taste and effect, we partnered with several laboratories to research the best extraction method for the Kratom and which flavours lend themselves to the drink on a larger production scale. Next, an outside factory was hired where the potions were bottled and pasteurised for a long shelf life. Finally, the drinks were tested by a legally accredited laboratory for nutritional values that can also be found on the label, which passed the Koagkag (check of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) for approval.

A drink that is more than 2,000 years old. Traditionally, Kombucha is a fermented drink made from green tea and a form of unrefined sugar. During fermentation, a process in which yeasts and bacteria process nutrients, the sugars are converted into other components. It has a slightly sour and funky taste.

Kratom is a tropical plant that grows naturally in Southeast Asia. The leaves of the Kratom Mitragyna Speciosa, as the Kratom plant is officially called, are traditionally hand-picked and selected, dried in the sun, ground into a fine powder and finally dissolved in water to make a tea. The Kratom leaves contain several types of alkaloids: active substances that can have different effects on the human body.

Yes, in the Netherlands and Belgium Kratom is legally available for people over 18. Abroad, it varies from country to country whether it is legal, regulated or prohibited. Kratom is especially popular in the United States. In several states you can find bars that are dedicated to serving Kratom tea (legally). It is estimated that about 5 million Americans use Kratom regularly, often as a supplement by intense athletes, but also for recreational purposes. However, there are a number of states in the US where Kratom is banned, including Alabama, Indiana, Vermont and Arkansas.

In low doses, Kratom is an uplifting drug with a euphoric effect. In higher doses, Kratom has a narcotic effect. In certain areas of Thailand, Kratom is used by a large part of the population as a stimulant. They do not make tea from Kratom powder, but chew on the leaves in order to ingest the active substances from the plant.

As with alcohol, how much you need to consume to feel something varies from person to person. We have kept the dosage relatively low with a dosage of 3 drinks giving the best results in most cases.

The effects set in after about 20 to 30 minutes and last about 2 to 4 hours, depending on the dose.

As with alcohol, the rule is “enjoy, but drink in moderation. With excessive use, Kratom can be both physically and mentally addictive, but this is not common. Do not use Kratom more often than once or twice a month. Overdosing can also cause nausea and headaches. Do not combine it with alcohol or other drugs and do not drive vehicles after consumption. It is not suitable for pregnant women, people with medical conditions or those taking (anti-depressant) medication.
